Abstract Identification and pairing of hydrologic events form the basis various analyses, from identifying for calibration models, to calculation event runoff coefficients catchment characterization. Despite this, there is no unified approach events. Here, using R package, hydroEvents ( https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=hydroEvents ), we compare multiple methods extracting focussing on relationship between rainfall runoff. We find four common analytical approaches used identify events—based either threshold, local maxima/minima, or proportion baseflow contribution, give similar results. However, when are paired runoff, type algorithm direction (either rainfall) make a considerable difference final pairs identified resulting analyses. demonstrate value automated extraction algorithms large‐sample hydrology analysis by calculating across Australia.
